Complicated stuff Flashcards
What is the difference between social scaffolding, guided participation and the zone of proximal development?
Social scaffolding a more experienced person provides a framework for the child to learn on a higher level than the child could by her/himself. In this case the more experienced person explains the goal of the task and shows how it can be done so the child learns with help. Examples of social scaffolding would be modeling, gestures and group work…
For guided participation the more experienced person organizes activities for children to engage in them at a higher level than they could alone. The different with the former would be that in guided participation the child solves the problem alone with no examples (I think).
When it comes to zone of proximal development see it like this: imagine a line divided in three, the FIRST part/zone is what the child can do ALONE with no help because the child already acquired the knowledge to do tasks in that zone. Then the LAST part is what the child CANNOT do, even with the help of more experienced people. The zone of proximal development is the area between these two mentioned zones. It basically consists of the zone including tasks the child CAN do, but only with GUIDANCE of more skilled people (adults or even children).
