UNCOMPLICATED UTI
Who is nitrofurantoin contraindicated in and why?
Patients with renal impairment; they don’t excrete well so it can lead to drug accumulation (toxicity) PLUS not enough gets in the urine (where we need it to go to treat the infection)
What is client teaching for those taking Nitrofurantoin?
TAKE WITH FOOD (will increase absorption by 40%)
May turn the urine brown (okay and harmless for this drug)
What are the [rare] adverse effects of Nitrofurantoin?
- Liver failure–look for jaundice
- Optic neuritis, peripheral neuropathy (tingling in the periphery)
- Lung fibrosis (difficulity breathing)
- Hemolytic anemia (weak, tired, SOB)
