What is mental health?
More than just the absence of mental illness
Also includes how you feel about yourself and how you adjust to life events
What is this:
- People feel good about themselves
- People do not become overwhelmed by emotions
- People have lasting and satisfying personal relationships
- People feel comfortable with others
- People can laugh at themselves and with others
- People have respect for themselves and others, even when there are differences
- People are able to accept life’s disappointments
- People can meet life demands and handle their problems when they arise
- People make their own decisions
- People shape their environment whenever possible and adjust to it when necessary

How does the textbook (Horwittz) define mental illness?
Having incomprehensibility and cultural relativity
Inability to understand the motivation behind the behavior; lack of meaning and comprehensibility of the behavior
Incomprehensibility
Behavior is abnormal or pathological as defined by that person’s particular culture and societal norms
Cultural relativity

- Negative or pessimistic outlook
- Expect the worst
- Few or no close relationships
These attitudes and feelings keep the STRESS RESPONSE ACTIVE and DEPRESS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
