Why are effective interviewing skills necessary?
To assess, formulate diagnosis, come up with goals together, implement task, and evaluate
Basically you need it for the nursing process
Without communication, mistakes can occur
What does it mean when we say communication is central to crisis intervention?
Counseling, teaching is necessary during crisis and related to effective care
What are 4 communication styles?
Assertive
Aggressive
Nonassertive (passive)
Passive-agressive
What communication style:
Stands up for own rights; protects rights of others
Assertive
What communication style:
Honest, direct, appropriate
Assertive
What communication style:
Communication that may be dishonest or inappropriate
Aggressive
What communication style
Says what is on their mind at the expense of others
Agressive
What communication style:
Seek to please; seldom let true feelings show, but then feel hurt or anxious bc they let others choose for them
Nonassertive (passive)
What communication style:
Defend their own rights by expressing resistance and general obstructiveness in response to the expectations of others

What communication style:
Comes across as apologetic and self-deprecating; voices are hesitant and weak, often monotone
Nonassertive (Passive)
What communication style:
Devious, manipulative, sly, and undermining; expresses the offset of what they are feeling; highly critical and sarcastic
Passive-aggressive
What communication style:
Allows others to make decisions for them, then resist using passive behaviors of procrastination, dawdling, and forgetfulness; use actions instead of words to express themselves

“Put downs”; intentionally leaving the receiver hurt, defensive, and humilated
