SZ drug treatment Flashcards
intro
drug treatment is based on the idea that SZ is caused by an imbalence of NT’s
para 1-A01
- chlopromazine and 1 st gen drugs
- chlozapine- 2nd gen
- diff individuals respond differently, ways of taking drug. duration
A03- 1
weakness- side effects neuroleptic maligant syndrome- neurological condition, neausia, high BP confusion, coma and death
tardive dyskinesia- involentary repetitive movments of face and limbs - could cause patient to not comply with tratment and withdraw- applications cant be applied
A03-2
strength- although SGA’s target specific areas of the body therefore dont expereince same extreme side effects FGA’s do e.g. muscle spasms, tiredness, high BP- increased complience rate can improve qual life and bring peroson bacl to normal functioning and reduce hostility
A03-3
strength- schooler 55 patients first episode of SZ, took either 1st/ second gen antipsycs- 2nd gen 75% reduction in symtoms and fewer side effects. relapse rates second gen= 42% first gen 55%
A03-4
weakness-unethical, drugs can be seen as a form of social control, a way for them t be more manageable for nurses, sedate them instead of aiming to imprve their quality of life- chemical straught jacket out of touch with relaity
A03- 5
strength- although better then older therapise such as insulin shock where patients were given very high doses of insulin leading them their blood glucose levels decreasing significantly- coma, often caused seixures, brain s=damage and even death
A03-6
strength- CBT better, client and therapist work together to find trigger for hallucinagtions and dellusions, and make coping strats, given hwk put strats into action, asked to explain reaons for thoughts. bradshaw said effects lasted still after a year of end of therapy whereas drugs side effects progress longer on tratment and if withdraw symptoms come back therefore CBT better for LT.
A03-7
Weakness-CBT not good for some, open up and talk about ilness, distressing and confirmation of mental state also can take months to work whereas drugs are almost immediate therefore thoes in high risk may benefit more from drugs and immediate treatment
A03- 8
strength- meltzer
481 patients with SZ 3 condtitions
- one of4 new trial drugs
- typical anti psyc
placebo
6 weeks later
reduced symptoms for 2/4 trial and anti psyc
- no change placebo and other 2 trial
therefore anti psycs do axtually reduce symtoms
A03-9
weakness- ignores social factors, reductionist. SCT- scuggests individuals develop SZ due to living in a urban area fast paced life in poverty open to many stressors which can trigger onset- suggestong psychological treatments better ACT CBT
conclusion
best approach treating SZ is hollistic approach combo of psyc and bio therapys, e.g. ACT along with drugs, most effective based on diathesis stress model SZ caused by combo bio and social, bio predispositions triggered by social factors, this stratagy eill reduce relapse rates and support long term recovery of SZ
