Systems of LTM Flashcards
Define: long term memory
The relatively permanent memory system that stores vast amounts of information for a very long time.
Capacity and duration of LTM?
Unlimited; for life.
Is the LTM an active or passive store of memory?
Passive, we are not consciously aware of info in it.
In what way is info in the LTM stored?
Semantically: according to meaning.
In what 3 ways can info be stored in LTM semantically?
IN a sequential/ordered manner (days of week)
Clusters, groups, categories (animals, FOOD)
LInks and associations semantic network.
How are long term memories accessed?
Using retrieval cues.
What are the two systems of long term memory?
Declarative and procedural memory.
What are the two sub-systems of declarative memory?
Semantic memory and episodic memory.
Define: procedural memory
LTM of actions and skills that have been learned previously.
Does procedural memory (and implicit memory processes) include conditioned emotional responses?
Yes.
Is procedural memory resistant to forgetting and brain damage?
Yes; eg. Alzhiemers and amnesia rarely affects procedural memories.
Define: implicit memory
Occurs when remembering something does not involve conscious or intentional retrieval but the memory can be expressed through behaviour; and is not easily expressed verbally.
Define: declarative memory
LTM of specific facts or events.
Define: explicit memory
When information must be consciously or intentionally retrieved and stated, and is easily expressed verbally.
How is explicit memory tested?
Recall and recognition
