Semantic network theory Flashcards
Define: semantic network theory
proposes that information in the LTM is organised in a systematic, hierarchical structure, in the form of overlapping networks of concepts that are connected by meaningful links.
Describe how info is stored in semantic networks
Each concept is represented by a NODE.
Nodes are connected by meaningful links.
Nodes and links organised in a hierarchical structure (begins with general concepts which links to more specific concepts).
Each node contains characteristics of that concept.
YES.
According to the semantic network theory, how is info retrieved from LTM?
Via spreading activation
Define: spreading activation theory
proposes that activating one node during retrieval from a semantic network increases the likelihood that associated nodes will become activated
How does the hierarchical structure of a semantic network aid in retrieval?
WE can deduce characteristics by moving up a hierarchy because items higher in the hierarchy already contain the characteristics. This eliminates the need to duplicate characteristcs, so less needs to be remembnered
Conditions of spreading activation?
More nodes are activated, more likely required info will be retrieved/more quickly.
Shorter the link between nodes, the stronger the assocation and less time to retrieve info.
How do we actually do the retreival process?
A retrieval code activates a node. SPreading activation causes related nodes to become activated, allowing us to follow the links to find the specific node we need.
