Measures of retention Flashcards
Define: measure of retention
ASK
Does the amount of information retrieved from memory depend on the measure of retention used?
Yes
What are the 3 measures of retention?
Recall, recognition and relearning.
Define: recall
Reproducing information stored in memory.
3 types of recall, in order from least to most sensitive?
Serial recall, free recall and cued recall.
Define: serial recall
Reproducing information in the order it was presented in
Define: free recall
Reproducing as much information as possible in no particular order (eg. SPE)
Define: cued recall
Using promps to aid retrieval and therefore the reproduction of required information. (Eg. first letter of a word)
Define: recognition
Identifying the correct information from among alternatives
Why is recognition more sensitive than retrieval?
More retrieval cues are provided, therefore information is more likely to be retrieved from LTM.
Define: relearning (method of savings)
Learning information that has previously been learned and stored in LTM again.
How does relearning indicate that info has already been stored in LTM?
When we relearn something, it generally takes less time than it took to originally learn it.
Ebbinghaus (1885) on relearning?
Relearned lists of nonsense syllables much quicker than originanly.
Why is relearning also called a method of savings?
Because we can measure the amount of information still retained (saved) from previous learning.
Savings score equation?
Savings:(((time OR no.trials for original learning)-(time OR no.trials for relearning))/(time OR no.trials for original learning)) X100
