Consolidation Theory Flashcards
Where does consolidation for explicit memories occur?
Hippocampus
Is there any clear evidence that consolidation occurs for implicit memory?
No.
Define: consolidation theory
: memories are transferred from STM to LTM due to physical changes to neurons, occurring both during and after learning.
3 conditions for consolidation to occur?
Physical changes in synapses
Time: about 30 minutes to finish consolidating, possibly weeks or years
No disruption
What happens if consolidation is disrupted?
Info might not bw permanently stored in LTM
How can consolidation be disrupted?
Head injuries, attention, arousal level (anxiety/alertness)
Describe the rat study.
Rats were given ECT immediately, 20 seconds, 30 minutes or 1 hr after learning a maze; recalled none of the maze (immediately), partially recalled the maze (20 sec - 30 mins) and completely recalled the maze (1 hr)
Define: reconsolidation
every time a memory is retrieved from LTM, it needs to be consolidated again in order to be stored again in LTM.
Gazzaniga and Heatherton (2006) rat study?
Rats recalled long term memories, injectected them with a drug that interfered memory storage and they could no longer recall the memory.
WHy do memories change over time?
Because whenever retrieved, they are reconsolidated and vulnerable to disruption
Is consolidation an all or nothing process?
NO
