Decay theory Flashcards
Define: decay theory
Suggests forgetting occurs because memory traces fade through disuse over time unless strengthened through repeated use.
Define: memory trace
Neural representations of a memory.
The decay theory explains forgetting as a physiological process rather than a psychological process: explain this process
the memory trace is formed as the memory is formed; and will fade overtime unless reactivated through repeated use
2 limitations of the decay theory?
Though decay does occur in sensory mem and STM it doesnt occur in LTM; therefore people can retrieve LTM’s not thought about in years (elderly childhood mems)
If it was true, retrieval cues would not retrieve memory traces from LTM
STrength of the decay theory?
It is a main cause of forgetting in sensory and short term memoires
