Syntometrine Flashcards
Drugs - Pharmacy
1
Q
What is syntometrine?
A
- It is a Oxytocic - drugs that cause contraction of the uterus.
- combination of two hormones: Ergometrine and Oxytocin.
2
Q
What is Oxytocin?
A
Naturally occurring hormone released by the hypothalamus during uterine contraction as part of a positive feedback loop.
3
Q
What is ergometrine?
A
Synthesised drug compound with oxytocic effects.
4
Q
Pre-Hospital Indication
A
- Post partum haemorrhage following neonatal delivery with or without placental delivery
5
Q
Presentation
A
- Ampoule containing 500 micrograms 10mg/ml
- For IM Administration
6
Q
Pharmacological Action
A
- Stimulates Lactation
- Stimulates uterine contraction during pregnancy
7
Q
Pharmacodynamic Action
A
- Action is specific to uterine muscle
- Stimulates the uterine muscles to contract forcefully
- force and duration of the contraction is dose dependent
8
Q
Pharmacokinetic Action
A
- Naturally occurring oxytocin is released on stimulation from the hypothalamus with absorption and transportation by the vascular system (blood)
- IM administration reduces blood plasma concentration and offers gradual bioavailability
- internally metabolised
9
Q
Side Effects
A
- Hypertension and Bradycardia
- abdominal pain with contractions
- headache
- nausea and vomiting
