What is misoprostal?
A
Prostaglandin Hormone
Prostaglandins stimulate peripheral nerve endings.
Normally licensed for gastric ulcers

Pre-Hospital Indication
A
Postpartum hemorrhage following neonatal delivery with or without placental delivery.
• Miscarriage with life-threatening bleed.
• Hypertension (BP >140/90)
Where syntametrine use is unavailable or inappropriate

A
200microgram tablets
oral or PV administration

Pharmacological Action
A
- Stimulates uterine contractions and minimises blood loss.
- Induced abortion (unlicensed indication)

A
- Uterine muscle contraction
- ripens cervix

Pharmacokinetic Action
A
- Absorption across cell membrane
- Transportation by vascular system
- oral administration offers gradual bioavailability
- metabolised in liver and excreted via kidneys in urine.

Side Effects
A
- Abdominal pain with contractions
- Pyrexia
- nausea and vomiting
