Insulin Flashcards
Drugs - Pharmacology
1
Q
What is Insulin
A
- Small protein consisting of 2 polypeptide chains
- stored as proinsulin in pancreatic islets-inactive hormone
2
Q
Action of insulin
A
- lowers blood glucose by facilitating uptake and utilization
- shifts metabolism of fats and proteins from breakdown to storage
- enhances oxidation of glucose and incorporation into storage molecules
3
Q
Insulin Binding to its receptor causes what?
A
Receptor activation - activates multiple kinases and phosphorylates that regulate metabolic activity.
4
Q
Insulin action in the liver
A
stimulates glycogen and fat synthesis and inhibits glycogen breakdown and ketone body formation
5
Q
Insulin action in muscle tissue
A
stimulates glucose and protein synthesis
6
Q
Insulin action in adipose tissue
A
inhibition of lipolysis and stimulates glucose uptake and triglyceride synthesis
