Q

What is a Diuretic?

A

Any chemical that increases urine volume output:

  • caffeine (dilates afferent arteriole of kidney
  • alcohol (inhibits ADH secretion)
  • Lasix (inhibits Na+, K-, Cl- reabsorption at nephron loop
  • Spironolactone (Aldosterone Antagonist)
  • Amiloride (potassium sparing)

Q

What is its Pharmacological Action?

A
  • Inhibits reabsorption of electrolytes (Na) back into blood stream
  • reduction of circulating blood volume with excretion of electrolytes (including water) in urine
  • Fluid is further drawn from cellular tissues so further reducing tissue oedema
