Class
A
Diuretic
3
Q
Classification
A
Loop Diuretic
4
Q
Actions
A
Increase volume of urine produced by Kidney
5
Q
What is a Diuretic?
A
Any chemical that increases urine volume output:
- caffeine (dilates afferent arteriole of kidney
- alcohol (inhibits ADH secretion)
- Lasix (inhibits Na+, K-, Cl- reabsorption at nephron loop
- Spironolactone (Aldosterone Antagonist)
- Amiloride (potassium sparing)
6
Q
Indication
A
- Diuretics used in pulmonary oedema secondary to cardiac failure (Left ventricular failure)
- Sometimes routinely prescribed to Manage resistant hypertension
7
Q
Presentation
A
- Ampoule containing 2ml or 5ml
- Furosemide at 10mg/ml
- Prefilled syringe
- May come in 40mg tablets or oral solution on prescription
8
Q
Pharmacological Action
A
- Increases renal blood flow
- 100% bioavailability IV vs 60-64% PO
- 2hr half life with 4-6hr effect
9
Q
What is its Pharmacological Action?
A
- Inhibits reabsorption of electrolytes (Na) back into blood stream
- reduction of circulating blood volume with excretion of electrolytes (including water) in urine
- Fluid is further drawn from cellular tissues so further reducing tissue oedema
10
Q
Side effects
A
- electrolyte imbalance
- hypokalaemia induced arrhythmias
- dehydration
