Drugs - Pharmacology
Class
catecholamine
Classification
Sympathomimetic
Actions
Stimulates alpha and beta adrenoreceptors
Generic Name
Adrenaline/Epinephrine
Presentation
Prefill syringe: 1mg/10ml
Ampule: 1mg/1ml
Pharmacological Action
- Sympathomimetic that stimulates both alpha and beta adrenoreceptors of sympathetic nervous system.
- Naturally occurring endogenous hormone that increases inotropic, dromotropic and chronotropic effect of cardiac and smooth muscle
- constricts smaller arterioles to regulate blood pressure
- facilitates bronchodilation
Pharmacokinetics
- released or interacts at a synaptic level
- metabolised by enzyme monoaminoxidase (MAO)
Indication
- cardiac arrest
- anaphylaxis
- life threatening asthma
Contra-indication
- Do not give repeated doses of adrenaline in hypothermic patients
Cautions
Ischemic heart disease, severe angina and hypertension in patients on non-cardioselective beta-clocker
Adrenaline Administration during cardiac arrest?
Administer adrenaline every 3-5 mins
Adrenaline administration in Cardiac Arrest - Non shockable rhythm?
Administer adrenaline immediately IV
Adrenaline Administration in cardiac arrest - Shockable rhythm?
Administer adrenaline after third shock. If VF/pVT persists, give adrenaline 1mg IV and amiodarone 300mg IV while performing a further 2 min CPR.
