suture/sx things Flashcards
main use of chromic gut
ligation of small vessels, gingiva. cheap
which holds tensile strength more: monocryl or vicryl. which causes more tissue drag?
monocryl lasts for 1 week. vicryl lasts for 2-3 weeks. vicryl has increased tissue drag
which absorbables are okay in contaminated wounds
PDS, monocryl
nonabsorbable with high tensile strength but high reactivity to tissues
silk. lasts 12 weeks tensile strength because braided polyfilament
nonabsorbable. lacks tissue reactivity. least thrombogenic. lots of memory
proplene (polyproplene)
what is proplene used for
tendons, ligaments, joint capsules and fascia
what has better handling and lower memory. it also has antibacterial by products. non absorbables. proplene (polyproplene) or nylon (polyamide)
nylon (polyamide). has irritating ends so leave them longer.
when do you choose taper point vs reverse cutting point of a needle.
taper point isn’t as sharp so it is for soft tissues where we dont want to make a larger hole. think bladder.
reverse cutting is for tough things. fibrous. stays sharper because there are blades.
type of suture best around an eyelid of a spicy animal.
absorbable. soft. doesnt need long tensile strength. vicryl
skin infection in dog bites
nonabsorbable. Nylon (polyamide). better handling than prolene and has antibacterial properties.
wound around anus. ulcerated. sensitive area
absorbable (vicryl, monocryl (poligecaprone), and PDS (polydioxanone)). nonbraided and can be used in contaminated site. monocril or PDS.
pyometra body wall closure
absorbable. contaminated. long tensile strength. PDS (polydiozanone)
