LA neuro cranial exam 2 Flashcards
dummy calf, no maternal bond, from in utero infection, or from genetics in angus
congenital hydrocephalus
main clinical signs of rabies in LA?
excessive salivation, aggression, vaccination, 100% mortality.
fever, major death in neonates, septic signs, caused from G- bacteria. in neonates it is from FPT. prog is grave. treatment is high [] of antibiotics
bacterial meningitis meningencephalitis
CNS injury secondary to vasculitis. multisystemic signs, death in 4-10 days. cause is chlamydiophila pecorum
sporadic bovine encephalomyelitis
sporadic bovine encephalomyelitis treatment
oxytetracycline, 30% mortality but lower if treated earlier.
histophilus somni causes what?
thromboembolic meningoencephalitis
what does TME cause cellularly? mortality rate?treatment? prevention?
apoptosis of endothelial cells. pneumonia, abortion, myocarditis. 90% mortality rate. treatment: florfenicol, oxytet, ceftiofur. only treat if standing.
common causes of brain abscesses in cattle
hematogenous, extension through calvarium, cribriform, nose ring placement. very poor prog in food animals.
common signs with pseudorabies? cause? diagnoses? prog?
very high fever, extreme itchiness. cause is a-herpesvirus. pig to other animal. lesion is mononuclear encephalomyelitis. viral culture PCR from nasal secretions. 95 % mortality.
high fever, keratoconjunctivitis, horrible mucopurulent discharge. ovine herpes virus. attacks vascular endothelium and all epithelial surfaces. dysregulation of T cells. enlarged ln. 95% mortality. majorly affects bison.
malignant catarrhal fever.
treatment/prevention for bovine herpesvirus?
most cases are fatal, good vaccine.
prion related disease, associated with feeding dead animals to eachother. disease? lesion?
bovine spongiform enecephalopathy. bilaterally symmetric neuronal vacuolation. 100% mortality.
what sheep disease is notifiable to the state?
scrapie.
common in feedlots. caused by neurotoxin. once neurosigns occur 80-90% mortality.
nervous coccidiosis caused by eimeria
two disease from dog related protozoa/parasites
protozoa: protozoal encephalomyelitis
coenurosis GID. taenia
most common tox of cattle
lead posioning
what is a early sign of vit A deficiency?
night blindness, convulsions, no PLR
polioencephalomalacia. lesion? cause? treatment?
softening of grey matter from vit B1(thiamin) deficiency. fairly good recovery with thiamine supplement and SC
signs of dementia, depression. may be from toxic plants. fairly poor prognosis.
hepatoencephalopathy
what is the treatment for nervous ketosis
dairy cattle. dextrose IV daily. propylene glycol orally.
calf, lamb, or kid born completely normal and BAR. quickly dulling, may have FPT or low milk intake
hypoglycemia. supp milk, plasma or dextrose.
postmortem diagnosis of vacuolation of neurons and neuropil. cows were falling around
bovine spongiform encephalopathy. prion
pigs: in utero, causes cerebellar hypoplasia. in adults causes petechial hemorrhage, vasculitis. can have PI animals
classical swine fever
