Sustainability Flashcards
What would you say the needs of the present environment are?
Building homes, infrastructure and other types of buildings to meet worldwide demands including population increase and technology developments, without creating irreversible harm to the environment for future generations.
Can you please explain what is meant by C02 emissions?
Two types, natural and human. natural released from respiratory and are needed. Whereas human C02 is released from burning fossil fuels and transportation which is damaging to the environment. It absorbs radiation and prevents heat from escaping causing global temperatures to increase (climate change).
What is meant by BREEAM?
BREEAMstands fot: Building Research Establishment Envornmental Assessment Method.
It provides third party assessment of the sustainability performance of a project at different stages of its life cycle. There are 10 different cateories.
How is sustainability measured?
Environmental - preventing harm / irreversible impacts
Economic - Efficient use of resources
Social - Strategic building decisions to the needs of society
Can you please tell me about BREEAM?
Stands for Building Research Establishment, Environmental Assessment Method.
It provides independent third party certification for the sustainability performances of individual buildings throughout the buildings lifecycle.
What is the Paris agreement?
Global framework to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to below 2 degrees. Under this agreement each country must plan and report their strategy to mitigate climate change.
What are three advantages of BREEAM?
1) Compliance will lower environmental impact
2) Compliance may reduce operating costs through efficiency
3) Improves marketability of the client or developer
What part of the building regulation deals with sustainability?
Part L - Conservation of fuel and power
What measures could you take to make a building more sustainable? Name 3:
1) Green roofs
2) Photovoltaic cells
3) Triple glazing windows
4) Wind turbines
What measures can you take on site to be more sustainable?
1) Just in time deliveries
2) Proper use of COSH zones
3) Use of barges to transport muck
