Sustainability Flashcards
• What is sustainability?
Sustainability is concerned with protecting the planet, halting climate change and promoting social development, without endangering life on Earth or leaving anyone behind.
What is EPC?
Energy performance certificates – rating scheme to see how energy efficient a building is – they are done every 10 years
What is Bio diversity
Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you’ll find in one area—the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our natural world.
What are the 3 pillars of sustainability?
Environmental, economical and social
What is BREEAM?
Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method – its third party certification of the sustainable performance of a building.. Unclassified, pass, good, very good, excellent and outstanding.
What is net zero carbon?
When the amount of carbon emission is zero or negative
What is SKA?
Operated by RICS it’s an environmental assessment tool for sustainable fit outs
What is a sustainable technology you use on your project?
Air source heat pumps – they take the heat from the air and boots it to a higher temp using a compressor and then transfers the heat to the heating system
how can sites be more sustainable?
Economise the transport fleet to site, take care with construction waste, have energy efficient site cabins build a sustainably supply chain
how can sites be more nurodiverse?
They can be highly sensitive to bright lights, harsh colours and contrasting tones so taking that into consideration in the design
what is bio-diversity net gain and how is this implemented?
Biodiversity net gain is where the biodiversity in the area is improved following the completion of a project. It is implemented by a biodiversity consultant will ensure the land is preserved as much as possible however in some circumstances there is no alternative but to safely relocate inhabiting animals, destroy or remove trees that may be an obstruction. It insists on replacing elements of the area and increase the bio diversity by 10%
• In terms of MMC, are you aware of the different categories for the GLA or Homes England?
Modern methods of construction – focuses on factory assembly and off site construction techniques like mass production – diff cats are pre cast concrete foundations, pre cast cladding panels
• What is the difference between embodied and operational carbon
Embodied carbon is the carbon dioxide (CO2) or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the manufacture and use of a product or service and operational carbon is the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted during the lifespan of an asset as a result of its operations (carbon lighting and heating)
• Do you know what the Building Safety Act is and when projects become applicable?
The focus is on high-rise residential buildings, hospitals and care homes that are at least 18m, or seven storeys, high, and contain at least two residential units. Regulations will require building owners to demonstrate safety at each of three new ‘gateways’ for planning and design, construction and occupation. Compliance will be monitored by a newly-established Building Safety Regulator,
What is Future Homes Standard?
The Future Homes Standard is a set of standards that will complement the Building Regulations to ensure new homes built from 2025 will produce 75-80% less carbon emissions than homes delivered under current regulations. (Part F and Part L)
