how many photos in a mugpack?
minimum 10… 1 suspect and 9 uninvolved persons
All images in a photo mugpack must be:
Similar in facial appearance
Similar in scale and pose of face
similar in background and lighting
what do we do if we have more than one suspect for an incident?
use one mugpack with minimum 10 people with 1 suspect per pack… use more than one pack if necessary.
How many times can we use a Photo lineup/ Mugpack?
only once and it can only be used for the occurence that it was created for
Dopplegangers:
people who look too similar in appearance are not good to use
how do we decide what order the photos of the mugpack go?
press the shuffle feature on NICHE or use someone who is completely unrelated to do the order of the photos.
How to present a mugpack:
Read instructions from the photo line-up form
Don’t deviate from the instructions
Confirm the witness understands
Place photos one on top of the other in sequential order
Present EACH photo ONE AT A TIME
Ensure one photo is shown at a time to avoid comparison
the victim is shown one photo and turns it over when they are ready to see the next one.
Ensure the vic/witness sees each photo at least once
stay in control of the photos to avoid the victim/witness from comparing the photos
what must we do with comments made by the vic/wit if they are not on video?
record verbatim any comments made
What should we get the vic/wit do with the photo line-up form?
read it out loud and sign it
can we use youths in a photo lineup?
no, use yougn looking adults.
what can can we do to reduce the chance of the victim/witness from picking the person that we want them to pick?
Never discuss the perceived accuracy of a suspect identification with a witness/victim
where is a good spot to pick from for when we don’t have a NICHE photo?

When do we use a lineup?
If you have a suspect, create a lineup
If you don’t have a suspect, can create a line-up based on the description- rarely done

Facial reconstruction: clay sculptures or drawing over a photo
Post-mordem drawings: cleaning up morgue photos
Age Progressions: suspect photos updated due to age
