What is the definition of Surveillance ?
The monitoring of public behaviour for the purposes of population or crime control
What are the 2 types of punishment does Foucault recognise ?
Sovereign power- Monarch had absolute power over the people
Disciplinary power- Institutions are controlling people by their use of surveillance
What is an example of Disciplinary power ?
Panoptic prisons that induce a form of self surveillance
What does Foucault say about the ‘dispersal of discipline’ ?
Prison is one institutions that, increasingly began to subject people to disciplinary power to induce conformity through self-surveillance
What are some criticisms of Foucault ?
Shift from sovereign power to disciplinary power is less clear than he suggests
