What was education like pre industrial revolution ?
There were no state schools and education was only available to a minority of the population
After the state become more involved in education what did your education depend on ?
Social class background
From 1944 what idea had education been influenced by ?
Meritocracy the idea that - everyone has equal opportunity to achieve and rewards are based on merit
What was the tripartite system ?
A system in which children are selected and allocated to on of three different school type
What is marketisation ?
The process of introducing market forces of customer choice and competition
How did marketisation of education effect education ?
Reduced direct state control over education
Increased both competition between schools and parental choice of school
What did Stephen ball (1994) and Geoff Whitty (1998) note about marketisation ?
That it only increased and reproduced inequality by creating inequality between schools
What is formula funding ?
Where schools are allocated funds based on how many pupils they attract
What is the issue with formula funding ?
The rich get richer and the better schools get more and more students
What did ball believe about marketisation ?
Not only does it reproduce inequality, but it also legitimises it by justification of its existence
What is the myth of parentocracy ?
That the education system is based around the idea of parents having free choice of school
What does privatisation allow for ?
The transfer of public assets such as schools to private companies, or they themselves functioning like private companies
