What is cultural deprivation ?
The underachievement of some ethnic groups as a result of inadequate socialisation
What are the three main aspects of cultural deprivation theory ?
Intellectual and linguistic skills
Attitudes and values
Family structure and parental support
What did Bereiter and Engelmann (1966) say about the language spoken by low income black familys ?
That they essensailly speak in restricted code
What does the the Swann Report (1985) find ?
That any impact of language declines as children get older and that pre-school language differences are rapidly overcome
What do cultural deprivation theorists see as the cause of failure in in many black children ?
Lack of motivation
Others argue black children are socialised into a ‘live for today’ attitude, what does this mean ?
they are less ambitions and fail to plan for the future
What did Daniel Moynihan (1965) say about black children ?
They are often parented by a single mother being they miss out on care and a male role model

Teachers are treating them as if they know less than white middle class students despite having similar qualifications

The black Caribbean family, provides girls with positive role models of strong independent women this is why black girls tend to be more successful in education than black boys

that ethnic minority children are culturally different, not culturally deprived

That their children benefit from an “asian work ethic”
What are some different pupil responses to labels based on ethnicity ?
They accept the label and can create a self fulfilling prophecy
Or fully reject the label
How do teachers label students in terms of race ?
They attach a preconceived meaning to the colour of their skinned treat them accordingly
