How to open sterile objects:

A
  1. Assess objects:
    • Look for pass markers
    • Look for expiration dates
    • Look for damage
  2. Place in inner edge of tray
  3. Push through opening in package
  4. Inner edge of seal is sterile, outer is not
  5. Open close to procedure
  6. Handle as little as possible
  7. Pour sterile solutions low and slow, writing should face you, basin should be at edge of sterile field

Clean up after sterile tray use:

A
  1. Gloves/Glasses worn
  2. Sharps to one side (physician does this)
  3. Wheel cart to sharps bin
  4. Use clamps to dispose of sharps (needle away from body)
  5. Throw out used products
  6. Rinse basin, metals in sink (slowly - no splashing)
  7. Rinse biopsy devices and place in biohazardous bag
  8. Basin, metals placed on tray
  9. Tray placed in “pick up” area for sterilization

A

On the front from the axilla to level of sterile field and 2 inches above elbow everywhere else is unsterile (neckline, shoulder, under arms, sleeve cuffs and back)

What is closed gowning and the steps?

A

You dress yourself with no assistance.

  1. Hair net, mask, goggles
  2. Gown
    - away from sterile field
    - Lift up, hold by inside arm holes and let it unfold
    - Extend arms in
    - assistant touches inside and pulls over shoulders
    - They tie waist first and then neckline

A

Scrub to elbows during washing

What is self gloving?

A

You glove yourself

Take from assistant and touch with your cuff of gown

Place glove over wrist with fingers facing you and thumb on thumb side

The hand being gloved pinches the inside glove cuff and the other hand pulls the glove around

You can now touch the other glove with your gloved hand and pull it on the same way
