Oxygen Administration Flashcards
Is oxygen medicine?
Yes
What is important to do when dealing w/ oxy?
Check correct patient
Correct flow rate
Correct device
Correct connection to oxy source
What is an artificial airway?
Tracheostomy
Nasotracheal tube
What is hypoxemia?
An inadequate supply of O2 in blood
What is hypoxia?
An inadequate supply of O2 in tissue or cell
What is pulse oximetry?
Measurement of O2 saturation of hemoglobin in arterial blood w/ 100% being the max reading
What should the pulse oximetry be?
SPO2 of 95%-100%
When is O2 therapy needed?
- Hypoxemia: Asthma, heart failure, pneumonia, pulmonary emboli
2) Hypoxia: Airway obstruction, injury, bloodflow due to circulatory system
Dangers of O2?
- Oxygen toxicity
Patient gets lung damage from high levels over 24 hrs - COPD
Patient becomes hypercapnic from excessive amounts - Tank leak
Frost bite
What is hypercapnic
Elevated levels of CO2 in blood
Signs of respiratory distress?
- Pulse oximetry (SPO2) measures less than 90%
- unusual respiratory rate
- blue/gray appearance on mouth, lips, face
- grunting or wheezing
- nasal flaring
- reverse pattern of normal breathing
- retractions = chest sinks in with each breath in
- sweating
When should an 02 tank be changed?
At 500 psi
What is a flow meter?
Controls 02 rate of delivery
Rates are in litres per minute
How should 02 be transported?
Upright, never on side (leakage)
Never close to patient (frostbite)
What is the cannula?
Nose part delivers 1-6L/min
