Q

Dangers of O2?

A
  1. Oxygen toxicity
Patient gets lung damage from high levels over 24 hrs
  2. COPD
Patient becomes hypercapnic from excessive amounts
  3. Tank leak
    Frost bite

Q

Signs of respiratory distress?

A
  • Pulse oximetry (SPO2) measures less than 90%
  • unusual respiratory rate
  • blue/gray appearance on mouth, lips, face
  • grunting or wheezing
  • nasal flaring
  • reverse pattern of normal breathing
  • retractions = chest sinks in with each breath in
  • sweating

16
Q

What is normal breathing rate in adults?

A

12-16 breaths per min

17
Q

Steps to transfer oxy from portable to wall unit?

A
  1. Turn on wall unit
  2. Match flow rate to patients prescription
  3. Check to feel flow
  4. Unattach tubing from from portable and attach to wall unit
  5. Shut off 02 on portable
18
Q

What do we do when patient is leaving?

A

Inspect portable tank (leaks, damage, enough 02 to last them trip back) and follow same steps
