When are sonographers around needles?
- biopsies
- Lidocaine prep (numbing)
- Thoracentesis or paracentesis (fluid removal chest/abdomen)
What does 1cc =
1 ml
What are hypodermic syringes?
Under the skin needles, calibrated in cc or ml and are referred to by the volume they contain (10cc syringe)
What are small syringes?
1-2mL
Subcutaneous (underskin) or intramuscular injections of meds
What are large syringes?
5-12 mL
Blood draw, prepare meds
What are 20 mL syringes for?
Inject/remove large volumes of sterile solutions
What is important when dealing w/syringes?
Pay attention to calibrations, diff syringes have diff measurement lines.
Where do you read the liquid volume of a syringe?
The top ring of the plunger (not bottom ring or raised middle section)
What are the hub, shaft and bevel?
Hub = point where needle attaches to syringe
Shaft - needle
Bevel - Slanted tip
What is guage?
Refers to thickness of inside of needle
Varies from 8-18
A bigger guage number =
The smaller the needle (thinner diameter)
What do you need to draw medicine? (4)
- med vial
- syringe
- alcohol pad
- sharps container
What do you look for before using a vial? (4)
- label
- expiration date
- single or multi use medication
- cracks/contamination/cloudy/colour change
Steps to draw medicine from a vial? (11)
- Wash hands/gloves
- Take off cap
- Wipe rubber top w/alcohol
- Draw in air to dosage line
- Insert need into stopper
- Push air into vial
- Turn vial upside down
- Pull back to dosage line
- Tap out bubbles
- Remove needle
- Sharps container
