ABHR means?
Alcohol Based Hand Rub
How to use ABHR?
2-3 pumps
Vigorously rub all surfaces of hands
Let hands remain wet for 15 seconds
Continue rubbing until dry
How long to rub ABHR?
15 seconds
Why do we have to wash after wearing gloves?
Micro tears, contamination from removing gloves
How to dry hands?
Pat, no rub
When to use ABHR?
When hands are not visably soiled
Anytime EXCEPT during food handling and visable soiling.
When to use soap and water?
When hands are soiled.
When is antimicrobial soap and water recommended?
Only in limited circumstances, should not be used for routine hand hygiene
For aseptic procedures
When to wash hands?
Before patient contact:
- before donning
- before entering room
- before handling food or meds
Before a clean procedure
After patient contact
After contact with patients environment
- after doffing
- after handling equipment
After exposure to blood or body fluids
How to wash hands w/ soap and water.
Wet hands 2-3 pumps soap Lather and rub vigorously all hand surfaces Rinse under warm water Pat dry w/paper towel Use paper towel to turn off faucets Discard towels
