drug used to reverse coagulopathies has much higher dose, fat soluble

from plant, manage BPH, cause bleeding, many DIs
Glucosamine/Chondroitin
pain w/ osteoarthritis, stimulates repair and formation of articular cartilage, highly variable, takes 8-12 weeks to activate
Black Cohosh
menopausal sx, caution in Br CA, uterine CA, causes bleeding, many DIs
Fish oil
rich in omega-3s, reduces triglycerides, useful for HTN, cardioprotection, anti-inflammation, risk of bleeding
Folic acid
brain development in fetus, water soluble
CoQ10
antioxidant, energy, cell growth, anti-inflammation, CHF, pt on statin should take
Calcium plus Vit D
bone-health, always conjunction w/ Vit D, ct in kidney disease
Iron
builds hemoglobin, excess detrimental, causes constipation, for anemia
Probiotics
encapsulated bacteria, maintain GI function, caution in immunocompromised, prevent diarrhea w/ anitbiotics
Ginko Biloba
antioxidant, treat circulatory probs, enhance memory/ prevent dementia, risk of bleeding
Red clover
reduce menopause sx, SE HA, nausea, rash, cause bleeding
Echinacea
antioxidant, shortens cold, do not take if TB, DM, liver probs
Alli (orlistat)
used to be prescription only for wt loss, prevents absorption of fat, cause GI upset
Caffeine
OTC as 200 mg tab, diuretic, inc metabolism, stimulate heart, potentiate muscle contraction, increase neural, increase FFA release
Ephedra
herb, performance enhancer, wt loss, cause cardiac probs and stroke, banned but struck down
Melatonin
help restore circadian rhythm, many DI (warfarin)
St John’s wort
mild to mod depression, lots of DI
Ginseng
fatigue and weakness

avoid isolated nutrients unless prescribed, take recommended dose, look for USP notation
