Superior mesenteric vessels, bowel, pancreas and spleen Flashcards
What part of the bowel is supplied by the superior mesenteric arteries?
the mid- Gut
Where do the coeliac artery, the superior mesenteric artery, and the inferior mesenteric artery branch from the AA?
Coeliac art= T12 - supplies foregut
Sup. mes. artery = L1 = supplies mid gut
inf. mes. artery = L3 - supplies hind gut
Name the 5 parts of the pancreas
tail, body, neck, head, uncinate process
discuss the function of the pancreas
endocrine function = secretes insulin into the blood stream and glucagon for glycogen breakdown
exocrine function = amylase, trypsin, lipase into the bowel for digestion
What two major structures does the pancreas sit between?
it is infront of the aorta/ceoliac trunk but it is behind the stomach
Does venous blood from the bowels go directly into circulation?
No, it runs into the portal venous system
Describe the billiary tree
Enters the duodenum at the ampulla of vader - splits to become pancreatic duct and the common bile duct, common bile duct splits to become common hepatic duct and cystic duct
How long is the small intestine?
20 ft.
What is the mesentery a part of?
it is part of the peritoneum
How can we tell the difference between the jejunum and the ileum?
jejunum = thicker wall, wider lumen, plicae circulares, longer vasa recta and shorter arterial arcades- thicker walls, less fat = translucent windows and easy to see the long vasa recta and less arterial arcades
ileum = mesenteric fat encroaches on bowel wall, peyers patches, more arterial arcades and shorter vasa recta - thinner walls - more fat in the mesentary makes it opaque- unable to see the short vasa recta and more arterial arcades
What are taenia coli?
longitudinal muscle responsible for haustrations- they originate at the appendix - so you can follow them down to the base of the appendix in op. theater
What are the appendices epiplocae? Where do we find them?
We find these little fat tags on the large intestine - they are a region very vulnerable to developing diverticuli because they contain small blood vessels that pierce the wall of the colon.
What branch of the superior mesenteric artery supplies the transverse colon?
the middle colic artery
Where would diverticulitis commonly present?
It would present in the left groin area most commonly
