Q

discuss the function of the pancreas

A

endocrine function = secretes insulin into the blood stream and glucagon for glycogen breakdown

exocrine function = amylase, trypsin, lipase into the bowel for digestion

Q

How can we tell the difference between the jejunum and the ileum?

A

jejunum = thicker wall, wider lumen, plicae circulares, longer vasa recta and shorter arterial arcades- thicker walls, less fat = translucent windows and easy to see the long vasa recta and less arterial arcades

ileum = mesenteric fat encroaches on bowel wall, peyers patches, more arterial arcades and shorter vasa recta - thinner walls - more fat in the mesentary makes it opaque- unable to see the short vasa recta and more arterial arcades

13
Q

What are the appendices epiplocae? Where do we find them?

A

We find these little fat tags on the large intestine - they are a region very vulnerable to developing diverticuli because they contain small blood vessels that pierce the wall of the colon.

Q

Where does the appendix sit in relation to the cecum?

A

it sits on the medial side of the cecum on it’s own little mesentery called the (mesoappendix)

17
Q

What branch of the superior mesenteric artery supplies the ascending colon?

A

the right colic artery

18
Q

What branch of the superior mesenteric artery supplies the cecum?

A

anterior and posterior cecal artery

19

A

the sigmoid arteries

25

A

the superior rectal artery

26
Q

where in the relation to organs it the portal vein formed?

A

it is formed behind the neck of the pancreas L1

27
Q

In what foramen does the portal vein pass through?

A

It passes through the foramen of winslow on the free edge of the lesser omentum

28
Q

Describe the spleen

A

1x3x5 size

7grams

between ribs 9-11

sits posterior to the mid-axillary line - develops from splenules- enlarges towards the right iliac fossa -

-sits within the right renosplenal ligament-
