Superficial Back Flashcards
Name the Extrinsic back muscles (superficial)
Superficial- traps, lats, levator scapulae, rhomboids
Name the Extrinsic back muscles (intermediate)
Intermediate- Serratus posterior superior, Serratus posterior inferior
Name the Intrinsic back muscles (superficial)
Splenius capitis, Splenius cervicis
Name the Intrinsic back muscles (intermediate)
Erector spinae muscles: spinalis, longissimus, iliocostalis
Name the Intrinsic back muscles (deep).
Transversospinales muscles: semispinalis, multifidus & rotatores
What are the superficial extrinsic back muscles innervated by?
Anterior rami of spinal nerve except traps which are innervated by a cranial nerve
What are intermediate intrinsic back, muscles innervated by?
Posterior rami of spinal nerves
What is the function of the extrinsic muscles of superficial back?
Limb movement (superficial) and respiration (intermediate)
What is the function of the intrinsic muscles of The superficial back?
Vertebral column movement and stabilization.
The occipital artery is ________ to the greater occipital nerve
Lateral
The accessory nerve (CN XI) and transverse cervical artery run ________________ on the ____________ of the trapezius muscle
Parallel to each other, deep aspect
The thoracodorsal nerve and thoracodorsal artery run ___________ on the _________ of the latissimus dorsi muscle
Parallel to each other, deep aspect
The trapezius muscle is positioned ________ to the rhomboid muscles
Posterior (superficial)
The dorsal scapular nerve and dorsal scapular artery run _____________ on the ________ of the rhomboid muscles at the medial border of the scapula
Parallel to each other, deep aspect
What innervates the trapezius?
CN XI (spinal accessory nerve)
Latissimus Dorsi attachments, actions, and innervation
Attachments- lower thoracic spinous processes, thoracolumbar fascia & iliac crest to floor of the intertubercular sulcus of humerus.
Actions- addiction, extension & medial rotation of humerus
Innervation- thoracodorsal nerve
Spinal Cord Segments- C6-8
Levator Scapulae attachments, actions and innervation
Attachments- transverse processes of C1-C4 to the superior angle & superomedial border of the scapula
Actions- Elevation & downward rotation of the scapula
Innervation- dorsal scapular nerve (sensory-direct branches of C3-4)
Spinal Cord Segments- C4-5
Rhomboids attachments, actions and innervation
Attachments- spinous processes C7-T5 & ligamentum nuchae to medial border of scapula
Actions- scapular retraction, elevation (upper) & downward rotation
Innervation- dorsal scapular nerve (sensory: direct branches of C3-4)
Spinal Cord Segments- C4-5
Trapezius attachments, actions and innervation
Attachments- the superior nuchal line, external occipital protuberance, ligamentum nuchae, & thoracic spinous processes to the clavicle, acromion & scapular spine.
Action- Scapular elevation (upper), depression (lower), retraction (middle) & upward rotation (upper and lower)
Innervation- accessory nerve (CN XI) for motor and C3-4 for sensory.
What are the attachments of latissimus dorsi?
Lower thoracic spinous processes, thoracolumbar fascia & iliac crest to floor of the intertubercular sulcus of humerus.
What are the attachments of levator scapulae?
Transverse processes of C1-C4 to the superior angle & superomedial border of the scapula
What are the attachments of the rhomboids?
Spinous processes C7-T5 & ligamentum nuchae to medial border of scapula
What are the attachments of the trapezius?
The superior nuchal line, external occipital protuberance, ligamentum nuchae, & thoracic spinous processes to the clavicle, acromion & scapular spine.
What are the 3 muscles that attach to the intertubercular sulcus of the humerus?
Latissimus Dorsi (floor), pectoralis major (lateral lip), and teres major (medial lip)
