Infratemporal Fossa Flashcards
What is the lateral boundary of the infratemporal fossa?
Ramus of mandible
What is the medial boundary of the infratemporal fossa?
Lateral pterygoid plate
What is the anterior boundary of the infratemporal fossa?
Posterior maxilla
What is the posterior boundary of the infratemporal fossa?
Mastoid, styloid process
What is the superior boundary of the infratemporal fossa?
Greater wing of sphenoid
What is the inferior boundary of the infratemporal fossa?
Mandibular attachment of the medial pterygoid m.
What are the muscles of mastication?
Masseter, Temporalis, Medial and Lateral pterygoid.
What innervates the muscles of mastication?
Mandibular n (from CN V3)
What are the actions of masseter?
Elevation, protraction and retraction of the mandible
What are the actions of temporalis?
Elevation and retraction of the mandible
What are the actions of medial pterygoid?
Elevation of mandible and rotates mandible to produce side to side chewing movements.
What are the actions of lateral pterygoid?
Depresses mandible, protracts and rotates mandible for side to side chewing movements.
What are the attachments of masseter?
From the zygomatic arch to the angle of the mandible and ramus
What are the attachments of temporalis?
From the temporal fossa to the coronoid process and ramus
What are the attachments of lateral pterygoid?
From the infratemporal surface of the sphenoid & lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate to the neck of the mandible and the TMJ disc
