succession Flashcards
define ecological succession- use clearing in it
the order in which organisms inhabit a cleared space.
define primary succession- use glacial retreat in eg
when an area is cleared after being covered/dormant for very long periods of time- glacial retreat
define secondary succession- use bush fire in eg
when an area is cleared by a fire and is left clear for a short space of time
what is the end of succession called?
a climax community
what does xermorphic grassland do with water?
stores it for long periods of time
define sere
an intermediate stage of succession
are pioneer species R or K strategies
R- they must reproduce rapidly and do not provide prenatal care
what is the significance of inhibition and facilitation factors in a community becoming a stable climax
the factors will cause fluctuation in populations until they meet an equilibrium and the population stabilises
what are halophile plants
salt loving
what is wood fall marine succession
woodboring bacteria move in, then detritus feeding organisms, then predators then chemosynthetic organisms
what is whale fall succession
crustaceans move in to feed on soft tissue, then marrow consuming organisms, then predators to MFOs, then chemosynthetic organisms
define terrestrial decomposer succession
carrion consumed by predator, aggressive scavengers move in, non-aggressive predators move in, arthropods consume bones and keratin
define ruderal plant species
the first to move into a disturbed piece of land- similar to a pioneer species
