Ecology of winter Flashcards
what does high sugar content in cold weather trees do?
lowers the freezing point of the leaves
how to cold weather trees reduce water loss through their leaves?
small stomata and hard waxy layer on outside
how are bulbs adapted to staying alive in the cold?
they can remain underground for long periods of time during winter
define homeotherm
an ectotherm
define poikilotherm
an ectotherm
what temp is H2O most dense
4ºC
what is the state of lakes in summer?
clear stratification of layers- warm and cool
what is the state of lakes during autumn and spring?
a state of mixture- the water circulates due to changing atmospheric temps
what is the states of lakes in the winter =?
clear stratification of density- layer of ice on tops which insures the bottom which stays fluid (4ºC)
define torpor
a state in between full activity and hibernation. it is a resting state practised by many large animals
do much smaller mammals hibernate?
no. they are constantly active and foraging as their bodies would lose too much heat due to their small SA:V.
in the UK what kinds of winters does the East have?
Cold (opposite in West)
in the UK what kinds of summers does the South have?
Warm (opposite in North)
