intertidal marine inverts Flashcards
define a diurnal tide
1 high and 1 low tide per day. rises and falls at dawn and dusk
define semidiurnal tide
2 low and 2 high tides per day
define mixed tide
combination of diurnal and semidiurnal. will vary from day to day and is based on differing abiotic factors
how are intertidal zones layered
horizontally in strips of indicator species
what abiotic factors affect the distribution of these species?
water chemistry, rock formation, exposure to weather and wave action
what biotic factors can affect zonal distribution?
competition and predation
how is patchiness beneficial to intertidal organisms? reference succession
it provides space for other organisms to move in and colonies, the process of succession begins
why must tidal pool organisms be tolerant to environmental changes
with no water supply for much of the day, evaporation changes the water chemistry drastically
