1-3 (decocted by itself for at least 2 hours) .3-.6 ground into a powder
1. Drains LV heat, calms the LV, extinguishes wind and controls spasms and convulsions (childhood convulsions and seizure d/o as well as stubborn high fevers and internal stirring of wind dt intense heat. Important substance for tx internal stirring of LV wind. Common used for childhood convulsions dt high fever)
2. Calms the LV and anchors the yang (important and effective substance for ascendant LV yang. Can be part of the formula to tx hypertension)
3. Clears the LV and improves the vision (blazing LV fire)
4. Drains heat and resolves fire toxicity (warm-heat pathogens. Heat in the pericardium)
5. Clears damp heat (wind-damp-heat bi)

6-15 (do not decoct longer than 15 minutes)
1. Extinguishes wind and alleviates spasm (patterns of LV heat with internal stirring of LV wind)
2. Drains LV heat and pacifies LV yang (LV fire and ascendant LV yang. Also hypertension)
3. Releases the exterior (exterior wind-heat patterns)

1. Calms the LV, extinguishes wind, and controls spasms and tremors (very important herb for tx internal stirring of LV wind. Whether caused by heat or cold)
2. Extinguishes wind and alleviates pain (wind-phlegm patterns. Also used for wind-stroke with hemiplegia, dizziness and numbness in the extremities. Both excess and deficienct conditions)
3. Disperses bi (wind-damp bi with pain and numbness of the lower back and extremities)

6-15
1. Calms the LV and anchors the yang (h/a, vertigo, dizziness from ascendant LV yang)
2. Dredges the LV qi to smooth its flow while dispersing constraint and clumping (pain and distention in chest or flanks. Irregular menstruation or insufficient lactation from constrained LV qi)
3. Dispels wind-heat and brightens the eyes (red, swollen, and painful eyes as well as increased tearing)
4. Dispels wind and stops itching (any kind of skin lesion with significant itching, such as hives. Also used for vitiligo, stand alone)

6-15
1. Calms the LV yang and causes it to descend while nourishing the yin and blood (ascendant yang with blood deficiency leading to dizziness and h/a)
2. Enriches the KD yin, reduces fever from deficiency, and stops night sweats (night sweats from yin deficiency with internal heat)
3. Clears heat and resolves toxicity (swelling and abscesses. Stand alone)

3-15
1. Calms and curbs the LV yang while also clearing and draining LV heat (either ascendant LV yang or fire. Stand alone. Or taken as a tea for hypertension with ascendant LV yang)
2. Clears heat and promotes urination (edema and urinary difficulty with heat. Quite strong effect. Stand alone)
3. Nourish the heart and calms the spirit (insomnia, palpiations, generalized nervous conditions, and post concussion syndromes)

1. Drains LV fire and anchors and sedates the LV yang (LV fire and ascendant LV yang patterns. Commonly used for hypertension with ascendant LV yang)
2. Improves the vision and causes superficial visual obstructions to recede (LV heat patterns that affect the eyes)
3. Recently used for increased gastric acidity and topically bleeding dt trauma)

4.5-15)
1. Drains heat, settles convulsions, extinguishes wind and stops spasms (extremely high fever leading to changes in conciousness. Sued alone. Also schizophrenia of hot-manic type)
2. Clears heat and unblocks and promotes movement in the channels and collaterals (swollen and painful joints with reduced range of motion. Most common for hot- bi, but also for cold. Also used for hemiplegia dt lack of flow in the channels such as the sequelae of wind stroke)
3. Clears heat and calms wheezing (for wheezing, espeically dt LU heat. Stand alone either as powder in capsules. Or decocted fresh with sugar into a syrup)
4. Clears heat and promotes urination (hot lin and, in severe cases, edema. Esp useful for problems associated with heat clumping in the BL with urinary difficulty or inability to urinate. Stand alone)
5. Also used recently for hypertension associated with ascendant LV yang patterns

3-9; 1-1.5 when powdered and swallowed
1. Extinguishes wind and stops spasms and convulsions (for childhood convulsions or facial paralysis. Also, usef for seizures from either internal stirring of LV wind or wind-phlegm-heat. Especially the latter)
2. Dispels wind, disperses wind-heat, and stops itching and pain (externally contracted wind-heat or LV wind. Also for loss of voice)
3. Transforms phlegm, softens what is hard, and dissipates nodules (phlegm heat scrofula and other phlegm nodules)
4. Expels wind and stops itching. Itching skin lesions such as wind rashes)
