Long Gu

1. Settles anxiety and calms the spirit (agitated Heart and Spirit)
2. Calms the LV and anchors and preserves the floating yang (LV yin deficiency with deficient yang transgressing upward)
3. Prevents leakage of fluids (loss of fluids dt deficiency)
4. Used topically (calcinated and powdered) for chronic healing sores and ulcers
Long Chi

Mu Li

9-30 (should be cooked first when used in decoctions)
1. Heavily settles and calms the spirit
2. Benefits the yin and anchors the floating yang (yin deficiency with ascendant yang)
3. Prevents leakage of fluids (continuous sweating in patients with steaming bone d/o or in the aftermath of a warm heat pathogen disease. Also used as an astringent for other sweating dt deficiency)
4. Softens hardness and dissipates nodules (various kinds of lumps. Esp useful for lumps in the neck)
5. Absorbs acidity and alleviates pain (used in calcinated form for excessive ST pain with sour taste in the mouth)
Chi Shi
acrid, salty, cold

1. Anchors and calms the spirit (yin deficiency and ascendant yang. Espcially useful when KD deficiency leads to upward blazing of LV fire taht deranges and disturbs the HT spirit)
2. Nourish the KD, augment the LV, improves hearing and vision (impaired hearing or deafness, tinnitus, or visual disturbances dt LV and KD deficiency)
3. Aids the KD in grasping the qi (chronic asthma dt failure of KD to grasp the qi)
Zhen Zhu
sweet, salty, cold
HT, LV

1. Sedates the heart and settles tremors and palpitations (Also used for disharmony of the HT and spirit where patient is easily frightened or angered)
2. Clears the LV and eliminates superficial visual obstruction (blurred vision or other superficial d.o of eyes. Often used topically as a powder)
3. Promotes healing and generates flesh (used topically for chronic, non-healing ulcers or macerated areas)
Zhen Zhu Mu
sweet, salty, cold
HT, LV
15-30 (should be cooked first if used in decoctions)
1. Calms the LV, anchors the yang and drains the LV fire (ascendant LV yang)
2. Clears the LV and clears the eyes (red eyes from heat with photophobia as well as superficial visual obstruction. Commonly used in ophthalmology)
3. Sedates fright and calms the spirit (Malaise of the HT spirit)
4. Stops bleeding (used for bleeding, esp from upper parts of the body)
Zi Shi Ying
sweet, warm

1. Sedates the HT, settles tremors and palpations (HT blood deficiency or ascendant LV yang)
2. Warms the LU, directs the qi downwards (cough or wheezing dt cold from deficiency in the LU. Esp with copious sputum)
3. Warms the womb while warming and unblocking the Chong and Ren mai (Cold from deficiency in the womb)
Hu Po
sweet, neutral
BL, HT, LV
1.5-3 (do not decoct or calcine)
1. Arrests tremors and palpitations and calms the spirit (disturbance of the spirit)
2. Invigorates the blood, dissipates stasis, unblocks the menses (amenorrhea or pain associated with palpable fixed masses dt blood stasis. Can be used alone. Recently used in tx coronary artery disease)
3. Promotes urination and unblocks lin (esp with bloody urine)
4. Reduces swelling and promotes healing (Swelling in pain especially in area of scrotum or vulva)
Zi Bei Chi
salty, neutral
LV
9-15 (must crush before decocting and cooked first in a decoction)
1. Calms the LV, anchors the yang, and sedates fright (ascendant LV yang or deranged HT yang)
2. Clears the LV, brightens the eyes (red, swollen eyes with superficial visual obstruction)
Sheng Tie Luo

1. Calms the LV and sedates the spirit (emotional disorders)
