Substance-related and Addictive Disorders Flashcards
What are substance use disorders?
Patterns of maladaptive behaviour involving the use of a psychoactive substance
What are substance-induced disorders?
Disorders induced by the use of psychoactive substances, including intoxication, withdrawal symptoms, mood disorders, delirium, and amnesia
What are psychoactive substances?
Describes chemical substances or drugs that have psychological effects
What is polydrug use?
Consumption of multiple substances
What is intoxication?
Substance-induced disorder characterized by clinically significant problematic behavioural or psychological changes caused by the recent ingestion of a substance
-state of drunkenness or being high
What are some signs of intoxication?
Confusion, belligerence, impaired judgement, inattention, and impaired motor and spatial skills
What can extreme intoxication result in?
Death to self or others
What is withdrawal syndrome?
Characteristic cluster of symptoms that occur when a person abruptly stops using a particular substance following a prolonged period of heavy use after psychological dependence has developed
What are some withdrawal symptoms?
Mouth dryness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, tachycardia, anxiety, depression, headaches, insomnia, elevated blood pressure, fleeting hallucinations
What are the symptoms of chronic alcoholism withdrawal?
Tachycardia, delirium tremens, delirium, disorientation
What are delirium tremens?
Withdrawal syndrome characterized by restlessness, sweating, disorientation, and hallucinations
What is delirium?
A state of mental confusion characterized by incoherent speech
What is disorientation?
State of mental confusion or lack of awareness with respect to place, time, or identity
What is tolerance?
A state of physical habituation to a drug such that with frequent use, higher doses are needed to achieve the same effect
What is the most widely used and overused drug?
Alcohol
What is addiction?
Impaired control over the use of a chemical substance accompanied by physiological dependence
What is physiological dependence?
State of physical dependence on a drug in which the user’s body comes to depend on a steady supply
What is psychological dependence?
Reliance on a substance, although one may not be physiologically dependent
What are the 3 pathways to substance use disorder?
Experimentation
Routine use
Addiction or dependence
What are depressants?
Drugs that lower the level of activity of the central nervous system
What do depressants do?
Reduces feelings of tension and anxiety, causes our movements to become sluggish, and impairs our cognitive processes
What happens with high doses of depressants are administered?
Arrest vital functions and cause death
What is the depressant present in alcohol?
Ethyl alcohol or ethanol
What are the biochemical effects of alcohol similar to?
Benzodiazepines
