Submandibular gland Flashcards
Describe the submandibular gland.
The submandibular gland is a large salivary gland, situated in anterior part of digastric
triangle and is roughly J shaped
What is the submandibular gland indented by?
Indented by posterior border of mylohyoid which divides it into
a larger part superficial to the muscle & smaller part lying deep
to the muscle
What does the superficial part of the submandibular gland fill?
The superficial part of the submandibular gland fills the digastric triangle
Where does the superficial part extend?
The superficial part extends upward deep to mandible up to mylohyoid line
The superficial part has 3 surfaces, namely :
Has inferior, lateral & medial surfaces
What partially encloses the superficial part?
Two layers of deep cervical fascia
What does the superficial layer of fascia cover?
Superficial layer of fascia covers inferior surface of gland & is
attached to base of mandible
What does the deep layer of fascia cover?
Deep layer of fascia covers medial surface of gland& is
attached to mylohyoid line of mandible
SUPERFICIAL PART RELATIONS : What is the inferior surface covered by?
• Skin • Platysma • Cervical branch of facial nerve • Deep fascia • Facial vein •Submandibular lymph nodes
SUPERFICIAL PART RELATIONS - The lateral surface is related to :
- Submandibular fossa on mandible
- Insertion of medial pterygoid
- Facial artery
SUPERFICIAL PART RELATIONS - The medial surface has..
3 parts - anterior, middle and posterior
The anterior part is related to :
Mylohyoid muscle
nerves
vessels
The middle part is related to :
Hyoglossus Styloglossus Lingual nerve Submandibular ganglion Hypoglossal nerve
The posterior part is related to :
Styloglossus
Stylohyoid ligament
Glossopharyngeal nerve
Wall of pharynx
Describe the deep part of the submandibular gland.
The deep part of the submandibular gland is small in size
The deep part lies…
deep to the mylohyoid
What is the deep part superficial to?
The deep part is superficial to the hyoglossus & styloglossus
What is the deep part continuous with?
The deep part is continuous with the superficial part around posterior border of
mylohyoid
Which artery is responsible for supplying the submandibular gland with blood?
The facial artery
Describe the submandibular duct.
The submandibular duct is thin walled and it is about 5cm long
Where does the submandibular duct emerge?
At the anterior end of the deep part of the submandibular gland
Where does the submandibular duct run?
Forward on the hyoglossus between the lingual and hypoglossal nerves
Where is the submandibular duct crossed by the lingual nerve?
At the anterior border of the hyoglossus
Where does the submandibular duct open?
On the floor of the mouth, on summit of the sublingual papilla at the side of the frenulum of the tongue
Venous drainage of the submandibular duct :
Drains into the common facial or lingual vein
Lymphatic drainage of the submandibular duct :
Into the submandibular lymph nodes
What supplies the submandibular duct?
The branches of the submandibular ganglion
What do the branches of the submandibular ganglion convey?
- Secretomotor fibres
- Sensory fibres from lingual nerve
- Vasomotor sympathetic fibres from plexus on facial artery
Secretomotor innervation pathway :
*Starts at the superior salivatory nucleus
* The preganglionic fibres pass through the sensory root of the facial nerve ;
through the geniculate ganglion; the geniculate ganglion is suspended by the facial nerve; pass through the facial nerve; branch of the facial nerve is the chorda tympani; from the chorda tympani; run in the lingual nerve; into the submandibular ganglion; synapse occurs; then postganglionic fibres emanate from the submandibular ganglion and enter the submandibular gland
What type of ganglion is the submandibular ganglion?
A parasympathetic peripheral ganglion
What does the submandibular ganglion act as?
A relay station for the secretomotor fibres to the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands
The submandibular ganglion is topographically…
related to the lingual nerve
The submandibular ganglion is functionally…
connected to the facial nerve(chorda tympani)
Where does the submandibular ganglion lie?
The submandibular ganglion lies on hyoglossus muscle just above deep part of submandibular gland
The submandibular ganglion is suspended by the…
lingual nerve by two roots
