Mandibular nerve Flashcards
The mandibular nerve[Vc] is the…
third and largest branch of the trigeminal nerve[CN V]
Describe the mandibular nerve[Vc]
The mandibular nerve[Vc] is a mixed nerve containing both sensory and motor fibres
Which structures does the mandibular nerve[Vc] supply?
The mandibular nerve[Vc] supplies all structures derived from the mandibular or first branchial arch
Where does the mandibular nerve begin?
The mandibular nerve begins in the middle cranial fossa through a large
sensory root & a small motor root
Where does the sensory root arise?
The Sensory root arises from the lateral part
of the trigeminal ganglion & leaves the
cranial cavity via foramen ovale
Where does the motor root lie?
The Motor root lies deep to the trigeminal ganglion & sensory root; it also passes through foramen ovale to join the sensory root thus forming the main trunk
Where does the main trunk lie?
The main trunk lies in the infratemporal
fossa and divides into a small anterior
trunk & a large posterior trunk
Main trunk branches :
Meningeal branch and nerve to the medial pterygoid
Where does the meningeal branch enter the skull?
The meningeal branch enters the skull through the foramen spinosum with the middle meningeal artery
Which structures does the meningeal branch supply?
The meningeal branch supplies the dura mater in the middle cranial fossa
Where does the nerve to the medial pterygoid arise?
The nerve to the medial pterygoid arises close to the optic ganglion
Which structures does the nerve to the medial pterygoid supply?
The nerve to the medial pterygoid supplies the medial pterygoid (deep
surface), tensor veli palatini &
tensor tympani muscles
Anterior trunk branches :
- Buccal nerve
- Masseteric nerve
- Deep temporal nerves
- Nerve to lateral pterygoid
The buccal nerve is the only…
sensory branch of anterior division of Vc
Where does the buccal nerve pass?
The buccal nerve passes between the two heads of lateral pterygoid
muscle
