Cervical plexus Flashcards
What forms the cervical plexus ?
The anterior rami of C1 - C4
What does each nerve divide into?
Each nerve, except the first, divides
into upper & lower branch
What does the cervical plexus receive?
Receives a grey rami communicantes
from superior cervical ganglion
What does the cervical plexus lie in?
Lies in series with brachial plexus (on
scalenus anterior & behind
preveterbral fascia )
What do the branches of the cervical plexus do?
Branches unite to form three loops.
Where is the cervical plexus located?
Situated opposite upper 4 cervical
vertebrae
What does the cervical plexus lie on?
Lies on scalenus medius, plastered
down by prevertebral fascia &
covered by SCM[sternocleidomastoid]
What groups does the branches of the cervical plexus divide?
Branches divide into superficial &
deep groups
MUSCULAR BRANCHES : Segmental branches to prevertebral muscles :
- Longus capitus
- Longus colli
- Scalenes
C1 loop (to hypoglossal):
Superior Root
of Ansa Cervicalis supply :
• Infrahyoid muscles
• Nerves to thyrohyoid & geniohyoid
MUSCULAR BRANCHES - Branches from C2 & 3:
Sternocleidomastoid
Branches C3 & 4
Trapezius
C2 & 3 :
• Inferior Root of Ansa cervicalis
• This root spirals around the lateral side
of the internal jugular vein.
What is the cervical plexus?
A collection of cervical nerve formed by the anterior/ventral rami
The cervical plexus gives off branches :
Anterior branches - motor
Posterior branches - sensory
