What are the 2 types of stye?

A
  • External: appears on the eyelid margin, usually caused by infection of eyelash follicle
  • Internal: appears on the conjunctival surface of the eyelid, usually caused by infection of a Meibomian gland

  • Chronic blepharitis

What is the presentation of a stye?

A
  • Acute painful swelling near the eyelid margin
  • Presents over several days
  • Should not be affecting visual acuity

What is the management of a stye?

A
  • Warm compresses around the eye 2-4 times daily
  • Avoid eye makeup/contact lenses
  • Self-limiting
