What is herpes zoster opthalmicus?
A
Reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus in the area supplied by the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve

How does HZO present?
A
- Vesicular rash around the eye
- Hutchinson’s sign: Rash on the tip or side of the nose: nasocilliary involvement

How is HZO managed?
A
- Oral antiviral therapy for 7-10 days
- Should be started within 72 hours of symptom onset
- Topical corticosteroids may be used to treat any secondary inflammation

What are complications of HZO?
A
- Ocular: conjunctivitis, keratitis, episcleritis, anterior uveitis
- Ptosis
