Structure Property Relationships in Synthetic Polymers Flashcards
Polymers
large molecules made by covalently linking many small molecules
Monomers
the small molecules that link to form a polymer
Addition polymers
made by addition reactions (2 molecules combine to form a single product molecule), formed from alkenes and alkynes
How does addition polymerization occur?
a molecule with an unpaired electron approaches a monomer, one e- from pi bond goes with free radical to form sigma bond and other lone e- bonds with next monomer
Characteristics of polymers
varying and controllable properties, based on packing density, IMFs, molecules within it
Cross link
a covalent sigma bond between 2 separate polymer strands not at the end of the ether strand (increase molecular weight and limit motion
Conjugated diene
alkenes with a double bond, single bond, double bond configuration
Copolymers
polymerizing a mixture of 2 or more monomers
Characteristics of copolymers
distinctive properties depending on substance, can be tuned based on ratio of monomers
Condensation polymer
a polymer formed via condensation reaction
Polyester
a polymer where the individual units are held together by ester linkages
Polyamide
a polymer in which the individual units are held together by amide linkages
