Metallic/Ionic Features Flashcards
Dipole
a distribution of electric charge where one side is more positive and the other is more negative; instantaneous dipole is temporary and very short
London Dispersion Forces
weak attractive forces due to instantaneous fluctuations in electron density (dipoles)
Metals
conduct heat and electricity well when they are solids/liquids; malleable; low IE; delocalized (shared) electrons among the atoms
Metallic bonding
coulombic attractions between the sea of shared electrons and the metal ions
Ionic bonding
overall attraction making an ionic crystal lattice stable; ionic compound is more stable than the individual ions
Formula unit
group of chemical symbols that indicates the smallest whole number ratio of ions to each kind that make up that substance
Polyatomic ions
a group of atoms with an overall charge
Lattice energy
the decrease in energy when the ionic crystal lattice forms from the separate ions; large lattice energy = big negative change in energy; very stable; increase with larger charges; decreases with bigger ion size
