Controlling Equ Composition Flashcards
Thermodynamically stable
when a reaction favors product(s) at equilibrium (temperature dependent)
Kinetically metastable
when a product favored reaction proceeds so slowly that it is considered not to be occurring (Ea is too high)
When is metastability used?
When thermodynamic stability does not apply or explain the reaction
Kinetic control
where the product mixture of competing reactions is determined by reaction rates
Thermodynamic control
all reactions occur fast enough so that equilibrium can be achieved
How to determine which products will form (competing reaction)
based on temp, (low temp, the one with lower Ea but possibly less thermodynamically stable will form) compare Ea and thermodynamic stability
