Structure of tooth Flashcards
Root
part of the tooth embedded in the gum
Crown
Part of the tooth that is visible
Enamel
Hardest substance made by animals, a thin layer that covers the crown
Dentine
Layer under enamel, not as hard as enamel. It has channels which contain cytoplasm, made of living tissue which secretes a hard mineral substance, nourished by pulp
Pulp cavity
Soft connective tissue that contains nerves and blood vessels. Found at the middle of the tooth. Extends from the crown to the tip of the root. Blood vessels present carry oxygen and nutrients in for the cells and remove waste products
Cement
Bone like tissue that covers the root. Has fibre that attach root of tooth to the gums and jawbone.
Root fibres
Attach teeth to jaw bone. allow teeth to move slightly when biting/chewing
Gum
Protects jawbone and roots of teeth
Jawbone
Has sockets for teeth
