Energy Requirements Flashcards
Why do we need food?
We need food to give us energy to do work.
How and why do we break down food?
We breakdown food in a process called respiration to release the
energy stored in the food.
Where does most of our energy come from?
most of our energy comes from carbohydrates in our diet
The amount of energy that can be obtained from food can be
measured in..
Joules (J), kiloJoules (kJ), calories (Cal) or kiloCalories
(kCal)
On average, an adult requires about…
12 000kJ of energy daily
Who are energy requirements greater for (gender)
MEN because men generally have more muscle than women (the muscles need energy to contract and bring about movement)
When does energy requirements increase or decrease (age)
Energy requirements increase up until age 18 and decrease as a person gets older, this is because children (0-18) are still growing which requires more energy.
As adults age.. (tissues)
There is a decrease in muscle tissue and an increase in fat tissue, so for any given body weight, older people tend to have fewer muscles and more fats, leading to a fall in basal metabolic rate (BMR).
Many people also become less active as they get older.
Who are some people who require more energy
Persons with increased levels of activity whether for leisure or work eg. construction workers
Pregnant women, and breastfeeding/lactating women also require more energy than regular women
Men require more ….. than women
protein than women due to greater muscle mass than women (usually develop in men’s shoulders and legs)
Women require more…. than men
fat than men due to greater fat storage (this occurs in hips, thighs, and breasts)
Women who are pregnant or lactating need more
Vitamins and minerals
