Q

WHAT IS RESPIRATION?

A

The chemical process by which energy in food is made available to cells.
This food is usually the sugar, glucose.

Q

AEROBIC RESPIRATION

Q

what does aerobic respiration produce

A

Produces a lot of energy (38 molecules of ATP) for every glucose molecule oxidized (broken down by reaction with oxygen). Oxygen needed for this process is obtained via breathing in humans.

Q

ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION

A

This type of respiration does not use oxygen to break down glucose.

Glucose is only partially broken down (unlike in aerobic respiration) and therefore releases less energy (2 ATP) than aerobic respiration.

Q

Where does anaerobic respiration occur

A

Anaerobic respiration can take place in muscle cells in humans, in yeast cells and in other organisms such as bacteria.

Q

ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION IN YEAST
The chemical equation is:

A

C6H12O6 🡪 2CH3CH2OH + 2CO2 + 2ATP

glucose ethanol carbon dioxide energy
Since alcohol is formed, this process is called ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION.

ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION IN MUSCLE

A

C6H12O6 🡪 2C3H6O3 + 2ATP

Q

Lactic acid fermentation only occurs if…

A

there is not enough oxygen to facilitate aerobic respiration. Therefore, anaerobic respiration occurs when the person is exercising or engaging in a level of physical activity that require more energy than can be supplied by aerobic respiration alone.

Q

describe oxygen debt

A

Oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid in cells. The amount of oxygen needed to remove the lactic acid build up is called the OXYGEN DEBT.

Q

Aerobic respiration involves

A

the oxidation of glucose to produce water, carbon dioxide and energy in the form of
ATP.

17
Q

Anaerobic respiration involves

A

the incomplete breakdown of glucose into lactic acid in the case of muscle or ethanol
and carbon dioxide in the case of yeast.
