Advantages of breastfeeding (5)
- Breastmilk is considered to be a complete food for babies (all necessary nutrients)
- Antibodies passed on to baby
- Milk is right temperature and consistency
- Milk is easy to digest-virtually all of it is digested by baby
- No preparation needed, readily available
Advantages of breastfeeding (4)
- Less chance of baby picking up gastric infections
- Baby less likely to have allergies and eczema
- Bonding between mother and baby
- Baby only takes what he/she needs so less chance of overfeeding and becoming overweight
Disadvantages of B.F
Puts a strain on mother
Mother cannot take certain medications
Mother cannot drink alcohol
Mother can become dehydrated and constipated if he does not drink enough water
Baby feeds more often (milk does not keep baby feeling full for very long)
Formula advantages
Less strain on mother
Can monitor exactly how much milk is being consumed by baby
Baby feels full longer, feeding less often
Contains necessary nutrients for baby
Other family members can be part of feeding process
Formula disadvantages
Expensive
Must be mixed at right temperature and consistency
Baby may not readily accept taste
Baby more likely to be overfed and become overweight
Baby may become constipated or have increased likelihood of stomach
