stroke Flashcards
occipital lobes
back of the head responsible for vision
periatle lobe
sensory information, including touch, temperature, pressure and pain. Speech also.
temporal lobe
auditory
some memory and visual
Frontal lobe
emotional regulation, planning, reasoning and problem solving occur.
Personality changes.
sulci and gyri
increases its surface area and enables more cerebral cortex matter to fit inside the skull
where is speech produced
brochas area
which side of the brain is assosiated with dysphasea?
left
cerebrum
two hemespheres joined by the corpus collosum
left sided stroke issues
reading, writing, grammar, listening, numerical, logic, reasoning, retention, decreased awareness of defecits.
right sided stroke issues
orginizing infomation, abstract meaning, music, facial reciognition
why are left sided stroke patients a falls risk?
they have decreased awareness of defecit
what is a haemorrhagic stroke?
Haemorrhagic strokes are caused by a burst artery in the brain.
what are the two ways of haemorrhagic stroke occouring
subarachnoid haemorrhages occour in the spaces between the layers where vessels are present.
intracerebral hemorrhages occour inside the brain
how do haemorrhagic strokes occour
weakening or dammage to the artery wall
what is an Ischaemic stroke?
A sudden loss of circulation to the brain
Risk factors of a stroke
Age 55+
Gender- men in middle age have higher risk and women die more from stroke.
Race- Blacks and espanic
Genetics
what are the 3 stroke types?
Ischeamic
Hemoragic
TIA attack
What are the treatable risk factors of strokes?
Hypertension Diabetes Smoking warning signs- loss of vision and blackouts cholestrol imabllance obeasity
Diagnosis of stroke
clincial assessment blood test swallow test ECG CT MRI Ultrasounded doppler echocardiogram
what are the criteria for thrombolysis treatment
thrombolysis treatment: Fluid passed through a catheter under a CT to unblock the clot.
cant be on anti-coagulants
INR greater than 1.7
has to be within 4 hours
2% chance of mortality
carotid endarterectomy
removing the clott under surgery from the artery.
carotid stenting
fine wire mesh passed into the artery under CT imaging
thromectomy
must get to the RVI within 6-8 hours.
catheter passed into artery and clot pulled out
common medications
anti-platelets anti-coagulants hypertensive medications cholestrol lowering anti-depressants
